Reader’s Digest India | February 2015 Issue | Magazine Reviews

The February 2015 issue of Reader’s Digest magazine (India Edition) reached us quite on time. Here are our personal reviews for the same.

Reader's Digest - February 2015 issue - Cover Page

Reader’s Digest – February 2015 issue – Cover Page

Let us start from the section we like the most in the magazine. It is about the heroes we found in our daily lives. They may or may not be recognised by many but they keep doing good work. They are the people who have will to help others and as it is said, “where there is will, there is a way”. The incident mentioned in this issue is about a youth who saw a car stopped on a Railway track and train was approaching. The physically challenged aged couple inside it was almost helpless, as their efforts to get the engine (of the car) started are all going into vain. What the youth did then is something filmy. He have tried pushing the car from the track and he was able to save the couple! It is very inspirational incident and we appreciate the tremendous work of the real hero – Chris Ihle.

Cartoony Wisdom – is an article about the wisdom we found trhough cartoon characters. The article is quite good but it would be better of the author have tried integrating some of the popular and favorite cartoon characters of the current generation. The article is good to go for, of course.

Up Close – section contains an interview with the author Dan Brown, who was on visit to India recently. The interview is quite good to read. Though all the literary fans of the author will found it shorter than expected.

The photograph of Earthrise taken by Bill Anders in 1968 is something you should not miss (available on page 52-53 of this issue). It is simply superb.

The case of Bone Marrow buyer – is about the legal aspects of – paying for Bone Marrow. You may or may not agree with the verdict of the jury on the same. You can react with your comments to the editor of the magazine or feel free to comment to this article as well.

The web is making jobs dull – is an article about IT (Information Technology) industry. However it is a fact that most of the IT jobs are more mental then the physical, and even sometimes considered as skilled labour as well. The article is focused on the automation and how it actually eats up the jobs (from the author’s perspective). There are some proofs like, the Google News are actually aggregated via a software (you can see that notice in the page footer as well). So there is no human needed to do the task. Interesting article.

Hippocratic Oaths – article is about health. It explores some of the basic rules to take care of your health and how it remain unchanged over the years.

Bringing the office home – article talks about the – working from home culture – and its benefits to both, the company and the employee. The good thing is the article also lists out some basic rules for the employee to do work in disciplinary manner. A must to read article, especially for people working in Information Technology industry.

The themed article – tired or sick – falls in health arena. The article is very detailed and is a good read for almost everyone.

If you like inspirational writings and love to read motivational books, the segment – “how to win almost anything” will surely interest you. There are some basic rules mentioned there which is a good take away.

From Shame to Fame – is about the Matera caves from Italy. People who are interested in learning about various interesting places around the world will enjoy reading it.

RD Classic brings a story titled – Stowaway. It is about a teenager who escaped in a way you may find very filmy and unbelievable. The story is written in good way and thriller lovers will enjoy it for sure.

The article about M. K. B. Nair is a good read.

The informative article about Nigerian Scam is interesting. Also the Outrageous section is good and not to miss. There are other regular sections makes the magazine more interesting.

One thing we learn from the “Reader’s reactions” segment is about the lack of awareness in the area of financial planning and knowledge of various rules about tax and investment; even in the educated people! It is an alarm for almost everyone to know the financial stuff in much better way to plan for the good and bad times of the life.

The cover page of this issue is not as attractive as expected.

Our personal verdict: you should go for it.
