Let us take a bird’s eye view of the episode. But, let me warn you that while I try my level best, some of the spoilers are unavoidable :).

Book Plot:

Now we know that a lot can happen on tea 🙂 , right?! Well, once upon a time in 1963, Byomkesh and Ajit was enjoying their tea when Dr. Rakshit came to meet numero uno detective of the time in Bengal, Byomkesh, of course.

Actually, he came with a strange request. He wants Byomkesh to pay visit to one of his bed-ridden patient, Bishupal, who later sarcastically referred as Shishupal throughout the episode. Bishupal is a wealthy fellow whose main job was money-lending. He used to give money against a security to the needy person and earn interest on the same.

When Byomkesh paid him a visit along with Ajit, in presence of Dr. Rakshit, he got to know that Bishupal’s both of the legs got paralyzed a few months ago. Actually, he lent some money to a fellow named Abhay Ghoshal. Abhay’s father was known to Bishupal and one day Abhay came to plea for Rs. 20000 (it was a very big amount back then). Actually, Abhay’s father was expired and his properties are locked due to a court case. Abhay wanted the money to hire a lawyer and fight the case to get his properties back. He promised to return the money once he received his property. Bishupal got emotional and he lent Abhay the money he requested without taking anything as the security deposit!

The court case was over and Abhay got free from all the convictions and got hold of his property also. Bishupal kept track of all the stuff and eventually he got to know that Abhay might actually had committed possibly more than one murder. Abhay also got caught with all the wrongdoings a spoiled rich brat can do. When Abhay didn’t make any attempt to return money to Bishupal, he has no way left but to meet Abhay and confront him.

He does the same. Initially, Abhay didn’t acknowledge anything and when the conversation went on to the height, he stared so brutally towards Bishupal that he feared for his life. That night he started shivering with some sensation and while the doctor was able to save him, but he got paralyzed from both of his legs.

Now he took all the precautions he can, a round the clock security guard, no outgoing, meeting only with selected people, and that too in the home. But, the fear of getting killed by Abhay is not leaving him. And he wanted Byomkesh’ advise in the matter.

The story then follows many incidents on the same day, and in the newspaper of the very next day, Bymokesh and Ajit got to know that there was a murder!!!

So, Bishupal’s fear was right? How Byomkesh gets to the edge of this crooked circle is the rest of the episode.

This episode is available to watch for free on DoorDarshan’s official YouTube channel. So you can enjoy it without paying a penny for the same, of course, you will be paying your internet bills :).

Views and Reviews:

The first segment of the episode has some good punchlines with sarcasm. Be it the Bishupal-Shishupal wordplay or the saying about “shakukaar”; they are enjoyable.

It is a delight to watch Rajit Kapoor and K. K. Raina as Byomkesh and Ajit respectively. Though Raina got less screen time, he is fantastic. The duo played these roles when they were young. See their body language and reflexes which are slowing down due to age (as the characters they are playing getting older); and you will realize the brilliance. They are fantastic.

Sadhu Meher got a meaty role in this episode. His dialog delivery disappoints. His acting is comparatively good. Sunil Sinha is convincing as Abhay Ghoshal. Actually, he is a surprise element (in terms of acting) in this episode. Athar Qureishi does his part as Dr. Rakshit quite convincingly. Rest of them does what is expected of them.

The story itself is a major positive point of the episode. The original story is adapted in a quite convincing way. The brilliance of both the screenplay writer and the director is visible here. The standard and realistic setup of middle-class homes and the street is explored nicely. And the wardrobe of the characters is chosen well. There are no funny and funky camera angles and there is no special effect. Actually, you will never feel a need for it when you watch this episode.

The makers took care of standard of living, the setup of the city, the environment those days and Bengali way of living.

The story has a substance needed in a detective fiction, the director explores it on screen in a nice manner, and the actors do their job; and the masterpiece is there.

Summary:

Overall the episode is definitely worth watching. It will make you realize that when you have good talents at your disposal and you have the vision to explore something, the budget doesn’t matter much. It is way better than some so called crime-thriller TV Shows running since ages on TV:). We wish that this TV Serial should be available on DVD set, but as it is free to watch on YouTube officially, it works as of now.
