Reader’s Digest India | December 2014 Issue | Magazine Reviews

The December 2014 issue of Reader’s Digest (India Edition) reached us quite on time, and here are our personal view and reviews for the same.

The cover page with Red background looks cheerful with the text in white and yellow. The cartoon representation of the man reading newspaper (in 3 layer cover page) is well thought and represents three important article of the magazine which affects the daily lives of the people. It (the cartoon representation) however fails to show the importance of these articles.

Editor’s note : section provides a good vision to the content of the magazine and you shouldn’t miss it.

Reader’s reactions: about the past issue are worth a read. The letter which got the prize this month tells a realistic incident (which many of us have visited with our own eyes, or even experienced it) about how a biker have decided to run away rather than being a gentleman. We need not to be foolishly attacking or interrogative to those who were rather trying to be a good human. Otherwise we keep losing them (good humans) from the society.

The finance related articles are really very important and they are worth reading. If only these articles were there in this issue, then also it was worth its price.

The article about importance of updating our information regarding financial stuff (including but not limited to the updations in the finance related rules) article talks about EPF accounts, Tax Rules (Gift Tax / Filing Tax Return), Whether you can buy a property abroad, Gold saving schemes, KYC norms of banks, dormant (bank) accounts, etc.

The : Outrageous : section is also quite related. It talks about Co-operative banks and commercial banks.

The shop that share : is an interesting read. One good one-liner from the article: If you cannot remember when you last used a gadget, probably you don’t need to own it! True.

The “Clean India Movement” took off interestingly and a photo showing a man dressed as Santa, cleaning up the water, is a good representation of the same.

Art of living: segment talks about “Trust”. The article is small yet good to read once.

What people look like: is an article taken from Dale Favier’s blog. (He is a massage therapist.)

The article is not very interesting apart from the fact it explores that: no-body is perfect (he includes examples of stuff like : Cellulite). It is giving the same message as we recently got from this message by Hrithik Roshan.

Do read : the curious case of the covered tractor : article. It explores the importance of filing a complaint on time about vehicle thefts.

Everyday heroes: brings the story of a lady who started a fight against the wrong and is getting support gradually. We are still having the social systems which were started with genuine intentions but are now creating problems rather than solving them. A social reform is needed always as the time progress.

The healing power of Nature talks about the following herbals and their positive aspects.

  • Echinacea
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • CoQ10
  • Quercetin
  • Curcumin
  • Flavonoids
  • Zinc

The article is definitely worth a read.

One more must read article from this issue is : What happens when hackers steal credit cards. In the time when people are doing more and more transactions online (or through cellphones), the usage of credit is grown a lot. Now people use credit/debit cards more often then the actual currency. We see a rise in cyber crimes (and finance oriented crimes which involves details of such cards). One needs to be very sure about the cards and their usage.

Memories set in stone: is an emotional journey you may like to read.

Bad neighbours: article tries to explore the problems in Indo-Pak relations. The author tries to get to the root of the problem by exploring 4 books.

The witty humours of this issue are worth reading. The most outrageous excuses: article also falls in the similar category. The small conversation made from 10 such excuses – is really good. Keep reading it and compare with the actual excuses which some criminals already made for them, and you will find it interesting read.

The sixth diamond: is a classic story. It shows how important the representation is. If you tell a thing rightly, probably you can get it done, when the chances are rare.

Power of the crowd and the real life drama of a fisherman who used his boots to keep afloat in child night (when he was sinking into the seas) are the articles which add to the positive of this issue.

The 13 easy ways to beat the cold are talked in a health oriented article which are worth to try. As they all are about healthy living practise, and usage of home remedies, there is nothing to lose in any case.

Our lost boy: is a story, telling you, how a cartoon character can affect a child. Reading it will definitely help you to understand a bit of psychology and good parenting.

The photo of peacock spider is fascinating.

Of course there are many other articles in the issue proving it to worth the time and money spent for the same.
