Agneepath | 2012 movie | Hindi Movie | Bollywood Film Reviews

Agneepath, the movie hit the screen and it is declared as a super hit. The previous version of the movie was interesting in its own. It was not hit economically on first release but was acclaimed. The movie fetch national award for the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan. The same production house, Dharma Productions (now led by Karan Johar, the son of the producer of the previous version Late Yash Johar).

Well, it is a debatable question that whether the remake should be made or not? Sometimes it plays with the important aspects of the movie in both good and bad terms. But Let us think that if “Aurat” was not made again by Mehboob Khan, have we had the legendary “Mother India”? If Devdas of K. L. Saigal was not made again, have we had a chance to see that critically acclaimed performance of the legendary Dilip Kumar (in the same)? However Danny (who played antagonist in the original movie) and Amitabh and Mithun have their own views for the movie; the old and the new.

Seems the time of the original masala movie came back, this is what we here with each new hit commercial movie. But Agneepath was not only the commercial movie nor it is. It was and is a thought-provoking experience which was having the stamp of Late Mukul Anand and is having the same of Karan Malhotra. The new version reminds the similar thought-provoking movies by Rajkumar Santoshi. Of course, we are not comparing any one to any one as everyone have his/her own slot.

The story is of course known to the people, but it is not implemented as was in the pevious version. This tale have its own differences. As we know from various news sources and promos, the track of Mithun Chakraborty in the original movie is no more here in this movie. The track of Rauf Lala (played by Rishi Kapoor) is added to the same. And as Danny was having his own persona which was made the character name Kancha China suitable to him. So the antagonist here is named simply as Kancha. Though Sanjay Dutt here relies more on his get up (which of course suits him) than his acting (where Danny is more respected).

It all starts at the (famous) small village of Mandva, actually it is a tiny island. Where people are still livining in the dark times of landlords and mafia. But where there are storms bringing the dark times, there are lamp glowers who can spread light everywhere and fought back the dark times. Master Dinanath Chauhan was such a nice person who was not only the better human but also spreading the light of knowledge, morals, ethics and other qualities in others lives too. He was a teacher in real. He was teaching the lessons of study to the school students and the lessons of life to the elders. The famous line he regularly teaches his son Vijay was about the self dependency, courage, power, humanity and quality. He was pushing support to the Salt factory which was running on co-operative bases by the citizens of Mandva and was the main source of Inspiration behind that. Though Thakur decided to grab the land and this enlightenment in the people was no more a good stuff for him.

He to overcome the people and start his own Salt Factory, calls up his son Kancha from Mumbai. Kancha was not good looking since childhood and hence became a rebel and then psycho. He was a full-fledged goon now. He comes to Mandva and sees the opportunity to use the land to grow Cocaine and other drugs there. But for that he needed to get rid of Master Dinanath. He executes a well thought plan to defame him and then kills him by hanging him to a tree. And due to the master execution of the plan the people of Mandva were also against the family of Master Dinanath. Vijay with his pregnant mother left Mandva and reaches Mumbai.

In a series of event he learn the bizarre and tough lessons of the reality of life. He remembered his father’s tale that a wick fellow can never say that he forgive a muscleman. One has to earn the power of equality and strength which can overpower the opponent and then if he forgives the other fellow, it is true forgiveness. He then traps into circumstances and become a henchman to Rauf Lala the local don. He always admired the police officer Gayatonde who was a genuine policeman by all the means. Rauf Lala’s main business was human trafficking of teenage girls by their auction. Of course, there were other wrong businesses he was doing as well.

Vijay’s next immediate target was to replace Lala and take power, then to go for Kancha. He plays wisely and kills the loved ones of Lala and then himself too. Of course Viju and Kali’s love track is also there. How he then reaches back to Mandva and takes his vengeance is the rest of the story.

Apart from the climax scenes, the other remarkable scenes are the fight between Lala and Vijay; Kancha’s hitting to Vijay on his first visit to Mandva. The togetherness of the people lives in the Chawls is also filmed well. There are no two thoughts on technical qualities of the film. The film excels on the technical aspect.

If the performances are to discuss, Hrithik Roshan excels as he is in all the movies. With the release of each film we hear that this is one more remarkable performance by him. And this movie is no exception. His performance is praised well and he proved once again that he is an intense actor. Priyanka plays her part. Sanjay Dutt doesn’t disappoint, his get-up is more echoing instead of his acting, but its good. Yesterday’s chocolate boy Rishi Kapoor stuns the viewer with his splendid performance in a role which is very different to his persona and roles he does so far in his career. Om Puri acts as usual. Zareena Wahab succeeds to let viewer feel her presence. Overall a nice movie, but you will surely feel during some scenes that they could have been better and stronger. A great movie takes a viewer with itself. It lets us feel the emotions of the characters. This movie sometimes fails creating that impact. The music is hit already. Overall a nice watch. Definitely much better than some commercial hits without great performance/script.
