The sixth episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot (English TV Serial, which was aired in Briton), is titled as Triangle at Rhodes.
This episode is focused on complicated human relationships and behavior. Poirot was desperate to take some days off from his life which revolves around various criminal incidents. Hence, he decide to visit Rhodes (in Greece). He was not much keen to take any cases as he is on holiday. But, miserable events always happen around him, and being very observant he cannot miss something mysterious cooking around him! That is how the case of the Love Triangle comes to him.
David Suchet is in full form as Hercule Poirot again. For example take the scene where you see him arguing with the custom officials and telling them that there is a difference between a detective and a spy. See his expression when he was called to resolve the murder mystery during the same argument. His irritatingly perfectionist character is explored well. We miss his buddies Captain Hastings and Miss Lemon in this episode. The story is quite gripping.
Usually we see the bright parts of tourist places. But as it is Poirot’s adventure (can we say that?), we witness the life at such places from all the aspects (which includes some less visited and ugly sides as well). The busy narrow streets with a lot of activities going on, locales trying to attract tourist, and other such stuff is filmed pretty well.
You can also get to know the style of swimming costumes available and popular in those days via the beach scenes. The introductory scene at the beach where we are introduced with 4 main characters of the story is nice to watch. The body language of all the characters is great to watch. The dialogs are smaller in this scene. In the first half of the episode Poirot’s communication with various characters (especially ladies) explores the facts and attributes of the important people for this story. The answers given by Poirot are mostly though his expressions. It would be tricky to decide he said yes or no. Though the other person involved in the conversation get it as affirmative answer, the viewers will be amused to see it.
The conversation at the dining table is irks the heat convincingly. The way Poirot advise the lady to leave the island is simple yet effective. Also the scene where Poirot’s bag is is being packed is a delight to watch. The facial expressions of the lady when she drunk the poisonous drink are really good piece of acting. The way the actress represent that she is chocked, is really convincing. Poirot’s communication with local authorities is interestingly filmed.
The climax scene is filmed pretty well. It is definitely one of the high points of the episode.
You will never feel that you are viewing such old TV Serial and there were technical limitations compared to these days. The script, dialogs and acting of the principal cast covers everything up. And yes the background music at the titles (beginning and end of the episode both) is really effective. If you love to watch murder mystery or crime thrillers, you will surely enjoy going for this TV serial.
The remastered DVDs came up with good sound and picture qualities, and you can expect the same quality at Amazon Prime as well. So seeing all the positive aspects, if murder mysteries and thrillers are your choice, than you may not like to miss this one.
