Malgudi Days – The Hindi TV Serial On DVD – Views And Reviews For Episode – The Hoard

The Hoard (MahaKanjoos) in Hindi is the episode which explores the story of the same name. Human nature and psychology is also an interesting science to study. It is said about the nature of a person that usually it is unchangeable. Money or wealth is a problematic stuff in various conditions, if you do not have it, you will be dying to collect it as much as possible. If you possess a lot of them, you will be worried to keep it safely. Well exceptions are always there and we found the people who use the right amount of money at right places. As the chief mentor of Infosys Mr. N. R. Narayan Murty said once, “The good thing about the money is it gives you the power, the power to help other, the power to change the things for good”.

The protagonist of this story is definitely the hoard. He is a comparatively wealthy fellow in the village. He do not use his money too much (or rather not use it when possible, we can say). Sheth Gopinath is the one we are talking about. He was thinking that money is not just money, it is the form of The Wealth Goddess Laxmiji. It is to be watched and preyed to, not to be spent. Gopinath was not thinking about pleasures of the life by any mean. He used to devotedly watch the money he have in the early morning daily as the most important routine.

About a decade ago when his wife was very ill. She was so much in pain and was asking to call the doctor. She was screaming and crying for the doctor. Here Gopinath’s philosophy of life was really interesting: “What doctor will do? Doctors are not angels. The death is the ultimate truth of life and no one can stop it, not doctors. Why call doctor. To pay him for his visit only? What doctor will do? He will check the patient (Gopinath’s wife) and will tell the same thing he is telling since a lot of visits that, the lady lack the amount of blood in the body, she needs to fed fruits etc to regain her health. Now the fruits are not coming for free. It is very costly. Do the doctor get commission from the fruit vendors too?“; something like that!

One day though, with the thoughts of generosity and humanity he bought a fruit(!!) from the vendor and came to his wife and offered her the same. She was dead till then though! Initially he felt bad but the the philosophy of life came to rescue him! He did some settlement with the Pundit also to cut-short the after-death rituals and formalities(!) anyway. Now he was all alone with his wealth. Of course he have his daughter who was paying a regular visit to him. He loved his daughter but didn’t like her son (his grandson)! The reason is the kid was mischievous. He loves to jump on the sofa, eat some sweets, asking his grandfather (Gopinath) for money etc. Which is contrary to the nature of Gopinath. One day during one such incident, Gopinath scold him and since then the kid didn’t pay visit to him.

Gopinath again have the attack of generosity and spend some money to make the kid happy! Well how is it possible?! There was a good reason. The 10 rupee note in his vault was all alone and hence he thought to spend it. He visited his daughter’s place and displayed a lot of love and affection to them. He then asked his grandson to come with him for a movie. Though definitely they will not go for a movie the kid will love. They will rather have to visit the nearest theater (regardless of the movie running there), because this way they will save the money of auto!

In a series of incidents, they ultimately enters into the theater. How was the movie? Did the kid like the movie? are the meaningless questions right? The important thing is the kid went missing during the movie! What will Gopinath do now? Is the kid kidnapped? Will Gopinath leave the movie from mid? Will he be able to find the kid? Will his nature be changed? Well, all these questions can be answered by watching the episode. A simple yet meaningful tale. Nice acting of the cast and strong simple script makes it watchable.
