Yamla Pagla Deewana | Hindi Film Bollywood Movie Reviews

Yamla Pagla Deewana, hear the words and you gotta know that they are related to Dharmendra – the veteran actor – in some way. One of the entertaining films of the year was titled the same and was a success at the box office.

Movie : Yamla Pagla Deewana
Director : Samir Karnik
Starring : Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Kulraj Randhawa, Nafisa Ali, Emma Brown Garett, Anupam Kher, Mukul Dev, Johny Lever, Puneet Issar, Himanshu Malik, Sucheta Khanna, Amit Mistry, Digvijay Rohildas, Krip Suri, Gurbachan, Lokesh Tilakdhari, Nikunj Pandey, Madhuri Bhattacharya (Item Song), Mahek Chahal (Item Song)

The phrase “Yamla Pagla Deewana” is taken from the lyrics of a song from the Hindi film “Pratigya” (released in 1975) starring the He-man of the Bollywood, Dharmendra. The song was hit at the times and the steps Dharmendra danced with, are considered as his trademark steps and whenever got a chance, the people asks him to do the same. Here they are representing the three dashing, talented and charming Deols Dharmedra, Sunny and Bobby as Yamla, Pagla and Deewana.

Paramveer Singh Dhillon [Sunny Deol] is living a happy life with his macho character in Vancouver, Canada. He have his short tempered but lovely Canadian wife Mary (Emma Brown Garett) whom he loves a lot and keep teasing and they have two kids both are like their parents. They lives with his mother [Nafisa Ali]. One day during a get togather with a fellow Indian, Sunny and family got to know that they met a thug at Banaras who resembles the photo of ParamVeer’s father Dharam. Paramveer and his mother realized that the thug was in fact Dharam. We gotta know that Dharam had left his wife and Paramveer a night when he run away with his another son Gajodhar. Both of them are conmen living in Banaras now a days. With the aim of meeting his father and brother and bring them to his mother by making them gentlemen, Paramveer comes to India.

He himself is cheated by Gajodhar Singh [Bobby Deol] on reaching at Banaras, later he knew that he is his lost brother. In try to find Dharam and Gajodhar, Paramveer started searching local bars and similar places. He meets Dharam there and tries to convince him that he is his father, he refused though. Later when a businessman thugged by the father son duo Dharam-Gajodhar comes with a lot of goons to get back his money, Paramveer saves them. Gajodhar then convinces Dharam that if Paramveer will live with them, his support will be a shield for them and lets him join his gang. During the time the live together there comes emotional incidents but Dharam was not ready to accept the truth. There comes, Saheba [Kulraj Randhawa] who is studying on the city of Banaras and Gajodhar falls in for her. Paramveer supports him emotionally to set their love story. All is going on the joy ride.

How could it work if there is no twist, no spice but only sweet!? There comes the twist, which is based on a folklore of Mirza-Saheba from the land of Punjab. Saheba belongs to Punjab and she has a group of dangerous brothers. Once they come to meet Saheba and found her with Gajodhar, without even caring to look at the guy they hit him hard and took Saheba with them. What will happen now, will Saheba be back to her love of life, Gajodhar? How the family problems will be sort out between Dharam-Paramveer-Gajodhar? All these stuff comes in the post interval section and it is a delight to watch on screen in stead of discussing here and spoil the mood to watch it.

Sameer Karnik’s direction is first rate here, he is also one of the producers. In the acting department all the Deol rocks. They do have strong bond in the real life which is displayed on the screen also. Watching all the deols togather is a delight in itself. When they shares the screen they rocks. Sunny got the role where he have to deal with drama, tragedy, a little romance and action (the people love him doing the action, which is really larger than the life). bobby got the role with little emotional but full of romentic stuff role. See his body language when he was chewing a paan as a banarasi babu and you will realise he is really one of the finest talents like legendaray father and brother but not explored that much. Dharmendra is a delight on the screen of course, his age is being displayed in some of the dancing stuffs, but who cares. Kulraj not only looks pretty but knows the acting and she is one of the best new comers. It really makes happy seeing Anupam Kher in a role where he needed to do some acting apart from making funny faces and all (which he is seen in lot of movies), he acts really well. Sucheta Khanna plays the role of Bholi (Poli) well. Nafisa is as graceful as she is ever. Emma Brown Garett acts cool (having hot temper). Mukul Dev is a revealation, he is a talent which is not getting roles up-to his mark, now he got a chance and he excels the same. Music is good but it could have been much better. The title song is great. Chadha de rang is really nice. Tinku Jiya, I must say it is one of the best Items songs of this year, even better than Munni Badnam and Sheila Ki Jawani. No flip sides, of course they are, some flip sides too. Sometime the movie is louder, some of the dialogs during the con acts are the chewed jokes. The scene when Dharam is talking to Saheba about Gajodhar (remember the scene from Sholay where Amitabh goes to Mausi by taking merriage proposal of Veeru for Basanti) is not impactful.

Overall a movie to enjoy! (Forget the logic when watch the movie)
