Gour Hari Daastan | Quality Hindi Movie | Views And Reviews

Have us started forgetting the struggle of Freedom, which was fought by entire India altogether to get rid of British rule? Are we getting too used to “things should move slowly until given the bribe”? Does truth always need to prove itself? Did we create a kingship where the public leaders of various parties, when in power, can mange the things like a king or count? Are we taking our freedom for granted, as we got it for free (while in reality it was achieved by so many sacrifices).

These and many such questions arise in our mind when we watch a fantastic film named “Gour Hari Dustaan“.

Movie trailer:

Let us take a look at the plot of the movie.

The plot:

It is real story of Shri Gour Hari Das who was a freedom fighter. In his childhood at Odisha he performed many tasks in the Freedom fight. He was part of “Vanar Sena” and used run along with the railway lines to deliver messages to and from the freedom fighters. In his school also he have hoisted Indian National Flag (not the current one, but the one which was recognised unanimously by freedom fighters) and was jailed by British officers as well.

All he did was because of his passion for the freedom of the motherland. Neither he was interested in fame nor money for whatever he did. The only thing he need is true recognition of what he have done for the country. When he was called fake freedom fighter due to not possessing the “TamraPatra” (letter of recognition on copper plate); he felt very ill.

The story explores how his son was not allotted admission in special quota for the descendants of freedom fighters, due to the lack of Tamra Patra.

He fights with the government for more than 30 years to prove that he did what he did. Ultimately he was able to get the recognition but it was a bittersweet victory for him as it took so long.

We see him proud and heart broken at the same time.

Views and Reviews:

The real story misses typical movie melodrama; but that is how real things are. The original story is represented without addicting too much masala. So it looks partially like documentary and at the same time it is a commercial movie as well. The screenplay is written nicely.

Viewers who are fond of watching modern films will find the pace of the movie a little slow. But, there are various tasks in the real world (especially the stuff explored) moves ahead even slower. Also some characters are written half backed (Tanvi, Commando of MLA, for example). Even the character of Rajiv could have been written better.

The research team have done remarkable job in finding various facts. The locations are well researched too; they adds authenticity to the movie. Realistic stuff is found everywhere in the movie; and you won’t complain missing anything larger than the life. Because the tale itself is larger than the life.

The dialogs are very well thought and nicely delivered. They are not long, but they are powerful. There are so many punchlines in the movie that you need to pay attention throughout or otherwise you will miss a gem or two.

The movie is out and out Vinay Pathak show. He portrays the protagonist fantastically. If you have seen his acting in Bheja Fry or Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi or Chalo Dilli; before this movie, you will be mesmerised by his range of acting. He stands out in this nice role. Konkona Sen Sharma gives him good competition but misses at a couple of places. Anyway, she is remarkable. Her body language matches her character altogether.

Rajit Kapur and Upendra Limye leaves their marks in comparatively small roles. They are both given good dialogs too. Vikram Gokhale comes on screen for few scenes but he makes his presence felt.

The movie have long roles for Ranvir Shrey and Tannishtha Chatterji. Ranvir’s role is meaty and he gets into it. Though, seeing his caliber his role could have been a little less confused character. He didn’t get chance to show versatility in terms of expression. But yes his acting is much much better than some so called stars we see.

We must say that almost all the small roles are also played by some fantastic actors and everyone of them did full justice to their roles.

The Gandhiji scene have good content but it fails to appeal it is intended to make.

There is no scope of traditional Bollywood songs in this movie. The – Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye – plays in the movie and remains effective. The background music is superb. The tunes match the theme of patriotism where expected.

In addition to everyone, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan requires special mention for the remarkable efforts he put into the movie. As a director, he did a splendid job for sure.

The movie is hard hitting and one needs to watch it with open mind.

Final verdict:

The movie could have been better and can have a little fast pace. There are some scenes which are half backed. But, it is the story which needed to be told, and it is told very effectively. Splendid performances, superb background score, impactful dialogs and simplicity makes the movie a – not to miss – one.
