Ret Ka Daldal (Quicksand) Episode From Hindi TV Serial Byomkesh Bakshi | Views and Reviews

Episode #6 of Hindi TV Serial Byomkesh Bakshi explores the story about a murder done mysteriously. Actually the killer used Ret Ka Daldal – i.e. – the quicksand – pretty logically to accomplish his task.

There are some professions in which you can possible have no vacations! For example doctors, policemen, soldiers of armed forces and many more. These are the people who not only have to be ready for emergency any time; but they got caught with the task related to their professional even when they are attending some social ceremony as well.

Haven’t we heard the cases when a doctor need to check someone in a marriage ceremony (which he/she is attending as an invitee) or when travelling in the train? Same happens to people of many professions. When there is a remarkable lawyer attending a social gathering, people are seeking a chance to get (free) professional advise from him, we have seen or heard of that right?! The list of such incidents can be endless, so let us not explore it.

Ok, got the point, but why are we talking about it, in this article?

Well, Byomkesh and Ajit are actually visiting a friend’s place, a kind of vacation, and they were caught with a strange case which they eventually had to solve.

The story is set in North Bengal during 1936 (the exact date episode shows is 3^rd August 1936.

Once upon a time Byomkesh and Ajit decided to take a break from their routine work and busy schedule. They paid a visit to his friend Kumar. Kumar took him to meet Mr. Himangshu (yes, we also thought that spelling should be Himanshu, but the title show it as Himangshu so we stick with it) who was a wealthy landlord. Himangshu was a hunter too. His command on various kind of Rifles and Shotguns was remarkable. He was even able to hit the bull’s eye blindfolded, by simply following the sound.

Himangshu was about to visit Tripura to follow up an hunting invitation and at the same time, he got the news that there is some important date of followup with some case in court. He was also informed that Baby(Himanshu’s daughter)’s master ran away by taking some important account books with him, which were very essential.

Actually since a few years, there are a lot many court cases going on related to the properties of Himangshu. All his accounts and other financial stuff was managed by his confidante Diwanji. Dewanji is an elder fellow who live in simple life style, and found very soft spoken. Himanshu’s daughter was also very fond of him. And Diwanji keep her entertained, sometimes even by playing voices of various animals.

Himangshu then request Byomkesh to help him in resolving the case. Kumar also insisted Byomkesh to do by re-iterating the fact that Himangshu was his best friend. Byomkesh Decided to look into the matter.

And, the chase begins…

Himanghsu Roy
A wealthy landlord from North Bengal. He was an acclaimed hunter also. He was kind hearted through. He was not fond of tedious management tasks and most of his wealth and legal matters were taken care by his confidante Dewanji. He had a daughter, whom everyone called Baby. He loves her so much.

Diwanji / Kaligati Bhattacharya
Fondly referred as Dewanji by everyone, Kaligati Bhattacharya is an aged soft spoken fellow. He was looking after all the legal, financial matters and management of properties for Himangshu Roy.

Harinath / Masterji
He is the murder victim. He was very poor and educated, so upon his request Himangshu hired him as his daughter’s teacher. He was very genuine and clever fellow. Baby was fond of him.

The story itself is very strong. We must give credit to original writer Sharadindu Bandopadhyay for this gripping story. The screenplay is written pretty well. As the original story was set in Bengal, the script writer needed to change it a bit so it can appeal the entire nation. And it is done pretty effectively.

The dialogs are simple yet effective. And director didn’t forget to add some punchlines like A tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye. Byomkesh respects the law and order by his heart, but at the same time he is a very practical fellow. In this incident he found that he cannot play by the book, so in order to let the justice happen, he twisted it a little. Ultimately the justice is served and he was happy with that.

The characters of Byomkesh and Ajit are written strongly of course. But, we must give credit to both Rajit and K. K. Raina to slip into these characters very effectively. Their body language, gestures and dialog delivery, everything is simply superb. If you watch them to playing the duo, you cannot imagine anyone else playing these roles later.

Anang Desai is a fantastic actor having very impressive voice. He justifies his character pretty well. Krishnakant gave equally fantastic performance as Diwanji. Rest of the actors are good.

The director did his job with dedication and his attention on detailing is remarkable. We also admire the way sets are designed and locations are picked. The background music requires a must mention.

The beauty of the episode is in its simple yet effective execution.

Overall a not to miss episode if you are crime thriller lover.

Overall an episode which is simple in execution, no larger than the life sets or special effects. It however stands out with some remarkable performances (including by actors and background team), effective writing, and flowless direction.
