The first part of the Shiva trilogy by Shri Amish Tripathi made it to bestseller list of 2010 and deservedly as here is a book in historical/mythological fiction genre that has the power to grip the reader from beginning to the end with its simple story-telling and lovable characters.
Book Title | : | The Immortals Of Meluha |
Author | : | Amish Tripathi |
Publisher | : | Thinkink / Westland |
This is a story of a man, a leader of a Tibetan tribe called “Gunas” named “Shiva”, whose destiny brings him to the mighty empire of Meluha in the sapt-sindhu where he is expected and readily accepted as a saviour thanks to a blue throat developed when he drinks the Somras giving him the name “Neelkanth”. The reader journeys with Shiva as he starts understanding a new civilisation, their codes of conduct, their problems and their strengths. He finds a love on this journey and leads one of the greatest battles of the time thinking that he is fighting a “Dharmyuddh” only to discover at the end that he has known only one side of the equation so far, that a change in perspective may change the world for the humans.
What’s most appealing about the Immortals of Meluha is the character of Shiva himself. A good man at heart with keen understanding who suddenly finds himself being considered God, with attached restrictions on his personal life as a mortal and the scrutiny and ramifications that every action of him gets subjected to. Being an outsider in a foreign land, who slowly discovers a place for himself and earns respect of people around him for his bravery as a warrior as well as his ability to love as a friend. Shiva symbolises every great man in the history who did not go in search of glory, but whose destiny found him and the man rose to fulfil his destiny and did such great deeds that elevated him to the status of Gods.
Hindu mythology is an ocean where sometimes you may find yourself in confusing tales and inter-relationship of various gods, demigods and humans. Shri Amish Tripathi has made a very nice attempt to cover all the most known aspects about The God of Gods, Mahadev’s life in this book, trying to rationalize and integrate the events described in various Hindu scriptures.
He also tries to represent a few incidents that the reader can associate with modern India like terrorist attacks and lack of diplomatic communication relations between two great empires finally leading to a war for no reason.
The next two parts of the trilogy are: “The secret of the Nagas” and “The oath of the Vayuputras“. A must read for all the logical beings who love to assemble a new full picture by putting very well known pieces together…. BTW: The book is available as AudioBook version as well.

More and more Bollywood movies are being made, based on the books. It is not all new trend, earlier also, SaraswatiChandra, Devdas and many more movies made based on the book, but the trend is re-appearing of course.
