Jazbaa | A Suspense Thriller Worth Watching | Movie Review

With so many streaming portals available in India these days, you gotta find some interesting movies to watch from the comfort of your home. Recently, I got a chance to watch Jazbaa a Hindi Film starring Irrfan Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Shabana Azmi and others.

I was in a dilemma about whether to watch this movie or not. On one hand interesting promos and its genre (suspence thriller) telling me to not to miss it, on the other, the way the promotions of movie “Sarabjit” had done injustice to Randeep Hooda (and the award function carried it the same way), I was not sure how the roles of both male and female protagonists actually took shape in this movie. But then, what is the best way to know it apart from watching i?

So, I’ve decided to go for it.

This Is Here In For You

Book Plot:

Let us take a bird’s eye view of the movie plot.

Anuradha is one of the top lawyers of the city having an impeccable record of winning cases. She is a single mother who lives with her daughter Sanaya. She, despite her busy schedules, try to keep herself fit and fine. She also manages time for important events of her daughter’s school. During one such sports event, in her presence, her daughter got kidnapped in just a fraction of time!

Inspector Yohan is a fearless cop. He knows how to follow the rules, and even bend them when needed. He wasn’t one of the ideal, honest cops nor he claims to be so. He, however, is a medal winner officer and his bravery is kind of unmatched. The shady characters of the city know that it would be better not to cross paths with him. In one operation he seems to take some bribe and as he was unwilling to sharing it with others, he is in rough waters.

As a matter of fact, Anuradha and Yohan, studied together and are at good terms.

The kidnapper of Sanaya contacted Anuradha with his demand. He wants Anuradha to fight and win a case of a rape-convict in exchange of freedom of her daughter.

Yohan wants Anuradha to fight for him, as his department has issued a search warrant against him and he is no more at the right side of the law.

The rape-convict was arrested by Yohan and he is damn convinced that he is the culprit.

Now, the personal and professional interests of Anuradha are almost against each other. And, she needs help of her friend Yohan more than anything.

So, what Yohan will do? What Anuradha will do? Is the rape-convict an innocent person? Will Shanaya be able to get her daughter released? Will she fight and win the case of rape-convict? Will Yohan support her? What will the rape victim’s mother think of Anuradha? How this mess will be cleared (will it be)?

All these questions are better to get answered by watching the movie.

Views and Reviews:

The movie has a really interesting script. Actually, even great performances fall flat if the story is not captivating. While some movie enthusiasts may get a hint of the suspect in the very last segment of the movie, but overall, it keeps you guessing it. And, that is one of the positive points of the movie.

The production quality is quite high. You see some fantastic visuals and locations (of course, within the premises of the plot) and you will surely enjoy them. Sanjay Gupta’s movies are known for having interesting visuals and almost all his movies got positive reviews in this arena. This movie is no exception.

Some fantastic dialogs are weaved in the story pretty nicely. Here are some of them.

As you can see, it is a nice collection where you get philosophical stuff, life lessons, satire, takes on current life style, thought-process of people these days… and more.

Let us talk about the performances. Irrfan is known for his performances and he does his work with honesty in this movie. Actually, he makes even simple dialogs impactful. And, he got some of the most interesting lines in the movie. He is his usual self. Aishwarya Rai tries hard to match with him. She is no doubt beautiful and her beauty often overpowers her performance. Some of the dialogs she delivers look less-impactful in that sense. Some sequences are added just to elaborate her beautiful persona on screen. No doubt, her efforts are honest.

Shabana Azmi got a very interesting small role in this film. She does justice to her role. The way she wears various expression is something not be missed. You can say that she is the perfect choice as a heart-broken mother of a rape-victim daughter. Abhimanyu Singh is a talented actor. I feel he is not getting roles as per his caliber. His role in this movie is small and effective. Atul Kulkarni is natural. All the other actors have done their job with honesty.

The cameraman knows his job and as said earlier, some of the interesting frames in the movie is a proof of that. Sanjay Gupta is in his usual form. The movie is his brainchild and his direction is a visual treat. Of course, it is a fantasy film and you cannot look for authenticity and realism in all the scenes. You need to watch it like a masala film. The movie has some brutality on screens, so watch it with consent. I must say that the director didn’t try to add unnecessary skin show and sensationalization.

The background music is a positive aspect of the movie. It adds to the moods of respective scenes quite effectively. Being a non-traditional Bollywood movie, it has no scope of having traditional movie songs (that you can expect in a typical masala film). So, in that department, you can think, it could have been better. Actually, apart from theme song, no song is required in the film.

The editor has done his job in a satisfying manner, and the pace of the movie is good.

Summary:

Overall, a nice suspense thriller made for mature viewers. It is available to watch on a streaming platform and as of now, you must have time to watch it too :). In my opinion, you should watch it. You will not regret the decision.
