Malgudi Days – The Hindi TV Serial On DVD – Views And Reviews For Episode – Cat Within

The story of “Cat Within” or “Paap Ka Ghada” as it is said in Hindi. We see a greedy landlord cum businessman was behaving rudely ad badly with the renters living there. He keep getting more money from the people staying on rent there for various reasons (e.g. in order to apply for the electricity connection they need to pay Rs. 30 more – and still the connection will not be made available to them!). But then also his greed was not satisfied (Actually the greed can ever be satisfied?).

An elder couple came to meet a Baba (a saint or the fellow with the special powers) who claimed to have the knowledge of astrology and some solutions to the problems the people bring to them. The young son was diagnosed by him as being in the love affair of some elder lady. As Baba (known as Guruji) claimed the lady was having bad influence of some sort and she is the reason for the bad condition of this youth. Later he explains that she have hypnotized this young guy. Which parent can see their boy in the problem!? They asked Guruji to provide a solution to the problem and Guruji was having it available on demand!

He asked the couple to not to worry and started speaking some chant like stuff and beating the young person. The young guy was screaming for help to his parents but they are helpless. After all, all these is going on for the good of the young fellow right?! He was beaten so much that he lost his consciousness. The Guruji then asks the father of the young guy to do some stuffs as per his instruction and pay him Rs. 25 and the problem with his son will be resolved for a while?! Seems direct connection to the world of future!

A businessman in the village arranges some old tin canisters around the door of his shop so in case if any thief try burglary in his shop, he can got collapsed with the same and sound of the same can woke up him and he can caught the thief. When he was sleeping in the night, the same thing happened! And he woke up the village and when they opened the door of the shop, they found some rats was the reason?! However if you think from another angle, for a businessman who sells grain, oil and other food items; rats are the biggest thiefs. They ate a remarkable amount of food products per month. It is intangible loss which cannot be mentioned or recovered at all! However, when they found no thief inside, the villagers made fun of the businessman. The Guruji also joint the crowd from his first floor home and advised the businessman to rather have a cat as a pet. So the rats will run away from there!

Next day one more elder couple come to meet Guruji. They came from Pondichery specially to meet the Guruji as they heard that he is the only one who ca resolve the problems they have. Guruji tried using a stack of cards and as he had a vision, the reason was hypnotism. The tough but achievable solution is to do some ritual as he suggest after getting his fees of Rs. 108. So much fees! Of course the couple came from very far ad they hired the car so they have money. And those who have more money, have to pay more!! Also the solution suggested by him found very tough for the couple to implement but the Guruji had the answer. The only thing the couple need to do is simply visit Guruji again and pay him Rs. 504. The problem will be solved automatically!!!

Villagers were chatting about the raised prices of Kerosene by the businessman. However the businessman explains that he had to pay more to purchase it, so he cannot give it cheaper any more. People were thinking that he is the greedy one. On that day the businessman closed the shop but didn’t lock it, he wanted to see, what will happen?!

Actually in the midnight the businessman heard some noise in his shop and when he tried overlooking inside, he sees that a vessel was jumping from here to there on its own. He called off the villagers but all came to conclusion that it could be the ghost and no one dared to open the door. Finally the businessman went to Guruji to come to rescue him and his shop? Will Guruji help him? How much he had to pay to him? What is inside the shop? Did the businessman was very sinful and it’s his judgment day today!?

Well all the questions are better answered by watching the episode. In the modern era also there are people who live like in the dark ages. A simple yet impactful tale which can be considered as a satire. In the cheap budget and simple sets, with basic yet powerful content, a watchable stuff can be created and this episode of Malgudi Days is the proof of that!
