Interview Of Kamal Upadhyay | Author of the Hindi Book – Lankapati ka Loktantra

Kamal Upadhyay is a well-known name to many. He runs a blog named Puranee Bastee (पुरानीबस्ती). His blog is having its own fan following and he fearlessly takes satirical digs at various happenings in our surrounding. His blog is in Hindi and his command over the language is remarkable. Based on his witty takes, we can assume that he is a well-read soul. Recently we got a chance to read his book Lankapati Ka Loktantra (लंकापति का लोकतंत्र) which is a good satire.

Kamal has started writing this book in 2014 and was completed by 2015. But the problem with the satire is, someone may take it to the heart and there can be controversies. Even if the author is convinced about his right to express something which is in no way ill-mannered and not written with the intention of hurting anyone’s sentiment, then also convincing a publisher to get it printed, is quite a tough job. And, we cannot blame anyone for the situation. We were eager to know that how the things went for Kamal, whom he loves to read, who is his inspiration and more. We proposed Kamal to have a small author interview and we are glad that he agrees and was able to spare some time for the same. So, let me present the Q/A session with Kamal and let us hear his thoughts loudly.

First of all, I thank you for reading Lankapati Ka Loktantra and considering me worth an interview.

I believe that the value of a person is determined by their work hence, I am really happy for all the reviews and responses to Lankapati Ka Loktantra, whether positive or negative alike. I wish to bring my next book in this series to my dear readers as soon as possible.

सबसे पहले आप ने लंकापति का लोकतंत्र पढ़कर, मुझे साक्षात्कार के काबिल समझा उसके लिए मैं दिल से आपका आभार व्यक्त करता हूँ।

एक व्यक्ति की सफलता को उसके कार्य से निर्धारित किया जाता है, इसलिए लंकापति का लोकतंत्र को मिल रहे सकारात्मक और नकारात्मक दोनों तरह की प्रतिक्रिया के लिए मैं खुश हूं। और ऐसी कामना करता हूँ कि जल्द से जल्द इस सीरीज की अगली किताब जनता के बीच आए।

My roots belong to Jaunpur of Uttar Pradesh. However, my parents brought me to Mumbai when I was just about a year old. While living here for 30 years, I feel native to Mumbai. After achieving an MBA in Finance, I have been working for private firms ever since. My interest in writing arose from the dialogues in a play, while I was studying in class 4th. Although having possessed a command over Hindi, I have never participated in any group discussion or debate, despite a lot of insistence from college fellows.

Have done some standup comedy during college, which was well received by audience. But, eventually it took a backseat since completing my studies. In 2014, started writing a blog named Puraneebastee. My first blog-post, “Shri Ram missing from Ayodhya” was read by around a thousand people in just 3 to 4 days! And then writing satire every Monday on Puraneebastee turned into a routine for me.

मूलतः तो मैं उत्तरप्रदेश के जौनपुर जिले से हूँ लेकिन मेरे जन्म के साल भर बाद ही मेरे माता – पिता मुंबई आ गए। अब मुंबई में 30 साल बीत गए हैं तो यही अपना गांव लगता है। मैंने फाइनेंस में MBA किया है और एक प्राइवेट कंपनी में कार्य करता हूँ। लिखने की शुरवात कक्षा चार में एक नाटक के संवाद से हुई। हिंदी अच्छी थी लेकिन उसके बावजूद कॉलेज में लोगों के लाख कहने के बाद भी मैंने वाद-विवाद प्रतियोगिता में कभी हिस्सा नहीं लिया। कॉलेज के दिनों में थोड़ा बहुत स्टैंड अप कॉमेडी में ट्राय कर चुके हैं जिसके लिए जनता से प्यार मिला लेकिन पढ़ाई के बाद उसे पीछे छोड़ दिया। 2014 में पुरानीबस्ती नाम से ब्लॉग लिखना शुरू किया। जिसपर लिखी पहली पोस्ट श्रीराम अयोध्या से लापता को 3-4 दिन में करीब हजार लोगों ने पढ़ा और उसके बाद सोमवार – सोमवार व्यंग्य लिखने का सिलसिला शुरू हो गया।

This is probably the toughest question for me and I really don’t know the right answer yet. But I unconsciously feel the urge to write in order to express and calm down the thoughts, characters, stories and other stuff that rise in my mind. Often it is the reflection of what I feel.

मेरे लिए यह सवाल सबसे कठिन है। जिसका सही जवाब मुझे भी अभी ज्ञात नहीं है लेकिन शायद से मन में उठते कहानियों और किरदारों के द्वंद को शांत करने के लिए लिखता हूं।

As I’ve mentioned earlier, my writing journey started from posting satires on my blog – Puraneebastee. “Shri Ram missing from Ayodhya” is actually the third chapter of Lankapati Ka Loktantra. Initially I wrote it as a TV Show script. And, I along with a director, approached many TV channels in the same regards. Soon we understood that it is not possible to make a TV show on the story. None of the channels were ready to take a risk by presenting a TV Show on this script!

Ultimately, I started rewriting this entire story by considering Raavan as the protagonist in a book-like format, and the result is here in before you.

जैसा कि मैंने आपको पहले ही बताया कि पुरानीबस्ती ब्लॉग से मैंने व्यंग्य लिखने की शुरवात की। श्रीराम अयोध्या से लापता मेरी किताब लंकापति का लोकतंत्र का तीसरा अध्याय है। पहले मैंने इसके मूलरूप को टीवी के लिए लिखा था और एक टीवी निर्देशक के साथ कई चैनलों को इसे पिच किया और जल्द ही इस बात का भान हो गया कि टीवी पर ऐसा कुछ संभव नहीं है क्योंकि कोई भी चैनल रिस्क लेने को तैयार नहीं दिख रहा था। बस उसके बाद पूरी कहानी को रावण के किरदार के साथ एक किताब के रूप में लिखना आरंभ किया और अब परिणाम आपके सामने है।

Since, Lord Shri Ram was the protagonist of the original story, and eventually I had to replace him with Raavan instead (as the protagonist). It was obvious that many changes were required in the story to accommodate it. We all know Lord Shri Ram as ‘Maryada Purushottam‘ or an ideal human being, and Raavan as a completely contrasting character. So whatever seemed satirical in Ram’s perspective looked normal in that of Raavan’s. This forced me to remove many incidents of satire from the book and hence, they lost the punch they held.

किताब लिखते समय जब श्रीराम के किरदार की जगह रावण के किरदार को लिया तो कई जगहों पर बड़े-छोटे कई बदलाव करने पड़े। चूंकि श्रीराम मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम हैं और रावण एक दंभी राक्षस इसलिए श्रीराम के परिपेक्ष्य में व्यंग्य लगाने वाली बातें रावण के परिपेक्ष्य में सामान्य थी। इन बदलावों के कारण किताब के कई व्यंग्य या तो मैंने हटा दिए या तो उनके प्रहार करने की शक्ति कम हो गई।

It was really difficult to get a publisher. You won’t believe but once a publisher was ready to print it and proof reading was also completed. I don’t know how and why but he then forgot it completely! And it is not the height of it, some publishers even demanded money from me to get my book published!! Of course, I didn’t like that idea.

In the mean time, I started writing a book named “Sangam” which was an erotic crime thriller . When I sent the transcript of Sangam to Juggernaut, the responded me positively, within a week. Later, I talked with them about Lankapati Ka Loktantra. It took almost a month to get reply from them to publish Lankapati Ka Loktantra.

प्रकाशक ढूंढना बहुत ही कठिन रहा। एक बार तो एक प्रकाशक ने किताब की प्रूफ की हुई कॉपी भेजने के बाद किताब को खूटें पर टांगकर भूल गया। कुछ एक प्रकाशक तो मुझसे ही किताब प्रकाशित करने के पैसे मांग रहें थे जो मुझे सही नहीं लगा। इस बीच मैंने संगम नाम की एक किताब लिखना आरंभ किया जो एक क्राइम थ्रिलर के साथ साथ इरोटिक भी थी। उसे मैंने जगरनॉट को भेजा तो वहाँ से मुझे एक सप्ताह के भीतर जवाब मिला कि वो किताब प्रकाशित करना चाहते हैं और फिर मैंने उन्हें लंकापति का लोकतंत्र के बारे में बताया और एक महीने की धर पकड़ के बाद वो किताब को प्रकाशित करने के लिए तैयार हो गए।

Actually, it seems that these days people are eager to get hurt, emotionally of course. Everyone is ready to feel bad about anything, anywhere. And I know that in my book, even this updated copy, there are many incidents which fall in the zone where it can hurt someone’s emotions. Be it the PIL filed by Lord Ganesha incident or the incident where Lord Shiva meets Raavan. However, if you read this by considering what it actually is, a satire, then I don’t see a reason to have a controversy on any of the incidents or stories mentioned in this book.

आजकल समाज में लोगों ने आहत होने का ठेका ले रखा है। हर कोई हर किसी बात से आहत होने के लिए तैयार बैठा है और ऐसे में मेरी किताब में अभी भी कई ऐसी कहानियां हैं जिसे लेकर लोग आहत हो सकते हैं। चाहे वो श्रीगणेश की PIL हो या फिर शिव भगवान का रावण से मिलना। लेकिन यदि वो व्यंग्य की पृष्ठभूमि समझेंगे तो इस किताब के व्यंग्यों पर कोई विवाद उचित नहीं है।

Though, Juggernaut publishes print edition of books, it is more focused on digital editions of the book. So, there is no print edition coming, at least in near future. If you want then I can get it published by paying for the same 🙂 😊.

I can tell you though, whenever the print edition will be there, it will be in a dialog like narration, so the readers can enjoy it even more.

चूंकि जगरनॉट डिजिटल कॉपी पर अधिक केंद्रित है तो फिलहाल प्रिंट संस्करण तो नहीं आ रहा है। आप चाहें तो मैं पैसे देकर छपवा सकता हूँ 😆😆।
लेकिन जब कभी प्रिंट संस्करण आएगा, तो वो संवाद के साथ होगा, जिससे पढ़नेवाले को किताब में और अधिक रुचि आये।

The cover page is designed by Juggernaut team. And it reflects the perspective of the book quite well. You can find a few sketches in the book and those are designed by my friend Chetan Adlak, They really goes well with the flow of the book. Especially look at the drawing where statue of liberty is shown writing the history of America.

जगरनॉट की टीम ने कवर पेज चुना है। रावण और व्यंग्य के परिपेक्ष्य से कवर पेज सही है। किताब के अंदर कुछ रेखाचित्र हैं जिन्हे मेरे मित्र चेतन अड़लक ने बनाया है जो कहानियों के साथ खूब ताल मेल बिठाते हैं, खासकर के जहां स्टेच्यू ऑफ लिबर्टी को अमेरिका का इतिहास लिखते हुए दिखाया गया है।

Frankly speaking, Juggernaut team sent me a few designs and I chose one from them. That’s my only contribution in book cover design.

जगरनॉट की टीम ने मुझे 5-6 पर्याय भेजें थे जिसमें से मैंने एक चुन लिया, कवर डिज़ाइन में मेरा योगदान बस इतना ही है।

Probably it is the first book where the mythological characters appear in this way. Actually the characters are from mythology but they are facing the same problems that we are facing, and they are fighting the battle against the wrong doings in the surrounding, in the same way we are fighting. You know, the main point is, we ourselves are the main reason of the problem(s) we are facing and then we consider others as the culprit. One should read this book to understand this fact and realize that what we need to change in ourselves and the system.

पौराणिक किरदारों को लेकर लिखी गई शायद यह पहली किताब है, लेकिन वो किरदार भी उन्हीं समस्याओं और कुरीतियों से लड़ रहें हैं जिनसे हम लड़ते हैं। सबसे मुख्य बात इन समस्याओं और कुरीतियों को हम ही जन्म देते हैं और फिर अन्य लोगों को इसका दोष देते हैं। उन बातों को समझने और बदलाव लाने के लिए यह किताब जरूर पढ़नी चाहिए।

When no one was able to find Raavan in Lanka, they arrange a holy sacrifice. The punditji who was going to conduct this ritual tried to get maximum benefits of the situation, asks Mama Marich to find 3 things i.e Milk of a Bird, Roots of River and Belching of Crow, which doesn’t exist. When we, as kids, over demanded our father for something, he often used to change the topic by referring this saying, that’s why, these lines are very special to me.

जब रावण लंका से लापता हो जाता है तो यज्ञ करनेवाले पंडित जी मामा मारीच से अधिक पैसा ऐंठने के लिए उन्हें जो हवन सामग्री बतातें हैं, वो है चिरई का दूध, पुरानी नदी की सोढ़ और कौवा की डकार, जिसका मिलना नामुमकिन है क्योंकि ऐसी चीजें होती ही नहीं है। हम जब कभी अपने पिताजी से कुछ मांगते थे तो वो यह कहावत कह कर बात को घुमा देते थे इसलिए यह दिल के बहुत करीब है।

Actually I don’t follow any predefined time table or fix schedule for writing. I start writing whenever and wherever I get a chance. Whatever I wrote so far, 90% of it is written during my journeys in Mumbai’s Local train. I found myself lonely in the crowd, especially during travel, and thus, I got to have a lot of time to write. In fact, all the answers of this very interview is written in Mumbai Local.

मेरी लिखने की कोई समय सारिणी नहीं है। जब समय मिल गया, लिखने लगता हूँ। मैंने अभी तक जो कुछ भी लिखा है उसका 90% मुंबई लोकल में यात्रा के दौरान लिखा हैं क्योंकि यात्रा के समय मेरे पास काफी समय होता है और उस भीड़ में मैं अपने आपको अकेले पाता हूँ। इस साक्षात्कार को भी मैंने मुंबई लोकल में ही लिखा है।

Again there is no specific genre which I follow. I read books of every genre. My three books are published so far and it includes a crime thriller, a satire and an adventure story for Kids and adults. My upcoming books will also follow the diversity in terms of genre. Definitely there will be more satires and humours stories then the (books of) other genre.

ऐसे कोई एक शैली तय नहीं है। हर शैली की किताबों को पढ़ता हूँ। मेरी प्रकाशित तीन किताबों में से एक क्राइम थ्रिलर है, एक व्यंग्य है और एक बच्चों और बड़ो के लिए लिखी गई एडवेंचर कहानी है। आगे आनेवाली किताबें भी इसी तरह अलग – अलग शैली की होंगी लेकिन व्यंग्य शैली की किताबों का अनुपात अधिक होगा।

Actually, I like everyone whom I read. However, to give you a hint let me tell you a recent incident. A few directors have rejected my script for a short film by telling that your story fall in the Premchand Zone.

मैं जिन्हें भी पढ़ता हूँ सब मुझे अच्छे लगते हैं। लेकिन कुछ दिन पहले मेरी एक शॉर्ट फिल्म की कहानी को दो तीन निर्देशकों ने यह कहकर मना कर दिया कि कहानी काफी प्रेमचंद जोन में लगती है तो आपके सवाल का जवाब शायद मिल गया हो।

I am reading Adventure in the screen trade by William Goldman.

विलियम गोल्डमैन की एक किताब है एडवेंचर इन द स्क्रीन ट्रेड उसे पढ़ रहा हूँ।

I love cooking in addition to writing. So I keep trying new dishes. These days I have started making short humorous videos of 25-30 seconds.

लिखने के अलावा मुझे खाना बनाना बहुत अच्छा लगता है इसलिए उसमें भी हाथ आजमाता रहता हूँ। आज कल 25-30 सेकेण्ड के हास्य वीडियो भी बना रहा हूँ।

I am active on Twitter and Facebook both. I feel that social network is a unique tool we have which can do marvel in the field of political and social literacy, if used properly.

मैं ट्विटर और फेसबुक दोनों पर ही एक्टिव हूँ। आज के दौर में सोशल नेटवर्क जनता के पास एक ऐसा माध्यम है जिसका सही उपयोग करके राजनैतिक और सामाजिक साक्षरता को बढ़ाया जा सकता है।

Definitely the market of Ebook is quite smaller than that of the printed ones. Due to increasing usage of smartphones it is growing remarkably, though. It will ultimately lead to more and more book being published, as the risk of the publisher is very low in case of EBooks.

हमारे देश में प्रिंट के तुलना में ईबुक का मार्केट अभी बहुत छोटा है लेकिन स्मार्टफोन के चलते अब यह मार्केट बड़ा होगा और अधिक से अधिक किताबों का प्रकाशन होगा क्योंकि ईबुक में प्रकाशक को कम रिस्क लेना होता है।

My social awareness is increased a lot and at the same time my trust on the political leaders is decreased to zero.

इस किताब के बाद मेरी समाज के प्रति जागरूकता बढ़ी है और नेताओं पर विश्वास पूरी तरह से समाप्त हो चुका है। 😆😆

During early days, there were street plays and wooden doll dances and their place was taken away by Radio and TV. These days we see a remarkable increase in existence of nuclear families. In this time I think it should be considered as remarkable even if kids got to meet their grandparents. Anyway, the change is the rule of the nature and by that law the children will also find their way to hear stories.

पहले नौटंकी और कठपुतली डांस होता था फिर रेडियो और टीवी ने उसकी जगह को ले लिया। एकल परिवार की बढ़ती आबादी में तो बच्चे दादा – दादी से मिल लें वही बहुत है। और बदलाव प्रकृति का नियम है बच्चे कहानी सुनने का कोई ना कोई माध्यम स्वयं ढूंढ लेंगे।

I’ve started Puraneebastee blog to write social and political satires. Often I write poems also. Some of the Puraneebastee articles are even published in Navbharat Times. The readers of the blog always kept me motivated by loving it. And I sincerely hope that they will keep showering the same love and affection to Puraneebastee.
