Let us take a bird’s eye view to the episode. But, let me warn you that while I try my level best, some of the spoilers are unavoidable :).

Book Plot:

When Byomkesh was killing his time reading the newspaper, accompanied by his wife Satyavati who was also reading the other pages of the newspaper, they have had an interesting conversation. The first interesting part is about Byomkesh’ logic. While all the normal people look for interesting news in the newspaper, Byomkesh find the advertises the most interesting segment of the newspaper! The second interesting part is Byomkesh and Satyavati’s conversation about who possesses the more criminal mind and played accordingly, men or women?!

Both of them have had their arguments and they could have gone on and on if not disturbed by a courier guy. Byomkesh received a quite heavy parcel which contains a lot of pages. It is like a manuscript of a book. And actually, there is a story written in it. But wait, stories are mostly fictional, here an aged man has sent what he had seen from his very eyes and he seeks Byomkesh’ help in solving the mystery and get the criminal punished.

Chintamani Kundu is living in a peaceful society of the busy city. His illness restricted his movements into his home only. So, to kill the time, he mostly sits near the window and keeps watching the happenings outside. He also had bought a binocular and he often uses it. It gives him clear and better view to what is happening around.

A man named Tapan Sen came to meet him a few months ago as he was looking for a home on rent. When Chintamani got to know that Tapan is newly married and they do not have any kid yet, he was quite ready to accept as a tenant of a located on the other side of the street which was vacated recently. Chintamani asked Tapan that the rent will be Rs. 150 and Tapan found it quite high (especially for his budget) as expected by Chintamani. However, when Tapan got to know that the home is furnished one and he doesn’t need to bring bed or furniture on his own, he agrees immediately.

Chintamani waited for him to come with his wife and luggage, but eventually got tired and fall asleep. When he checked in the morning he found that Tapan should have shifted to this home late night. Anyway, he saw Tapan’s wife Shanta going to market and later she came to meet him also. They often meet a few days interval, but he hadn’t met with Tapan since their arrival. As he knew that Tapan is doing a job as a reporter and he does night duty, he wasn’t much worried.

But, one day, Chintamani saw a murder being happened in the dark street with his own eyes. Of course, through his window, unknown to the murderer. He, however, was able to identify the murderer!

And that is the reason for which he consulted police. Now, police need Byomkesh’ assistance in the matter to resolve the mystery.

Views and Reviews:

The story is quite interesting. Curious viewers will surely be able to find or at least do an educated guess about the murderer. To do some mental exercise, just pay attention to the news articles Byomkesh and Satya were talking about. Their conversation is not just to show a regular domestic environment. Telling more in this regards will ruin your viewing experience, so let us not talk more about it.

The men v/s women conversation at the beginning of the episode must be seen without any prejudice. It is not about taking any side, but rather, to understand that, whether you accept it or not, everyone has a potential. In terms of good and bad both the things, both the genders are equally capable to shock you with their abilities and deed. There can be exceptions to any rule and we don’t need to rush to generalize the matter.

While the script and dialogs are really good in this scene, the acting of both Rajit and Sukanya makes it interesting. And yes, you will definitely get the glimpses of tea-table conversation in a typical family.

The story and script are really interesting, and especially when you think about the environment of 1960 or the time when the book was initially published, you can conclude that the readers at that time must have loved it.

There are some scenes which you may not find very impressive as we tend to see some fantastically filmed things these days, studded with SFX and VFX. The simplicity is, however, the essence of this episode. Basu Chatterji is good at exploring realistic things on the celluloid and he is in a good form here. So despite some “poor acting” scenes and limited resources and some “not so great” scenes, the episode leaves its impact.

The background music complements the other aspects of the episode. It makes the impact of the episode multifold, making you love watching it.

Rajit Kapoor got the meatiest role and he makes the best of the opportunity. He justifies the character of Byomkesh with his genuine acting and realistic gestures. His facial expressions are worth watching for sure. You may think that if better actors have played Shanti and Tapan, the impact could have been better. The actresses who played sales girls definitely need to work a lot on their acting skills, they are not convincing at all. The actor playing the role of the inspector is average.

The wardrobe and the locales are the positive attributes of the episode.

Summary:

Overall, a nice episode which is worth watching. If you love detective fictions, you will love watching it for sure. The episode is made available on the public domain of YouTube on the official channel of Doordarshan to watch for everyone for free.
