One day when Byomkesh, Satyavati and Ajit were busy in their daily routine, Habul visits him with teary eyes. By the way the conversation they were enjoying with tea and breakfast is worth watching. It gives us glimpses of some of the unique attributes of the principal characters.
Byomkesh didn’t find anything interesting in the news, so he suggested that, as there is nothing interesting in the news, it could have been better to not to publish it, to save the cost of printing. It shows his no-nonsense approach. He is keen about the proper management of all the resources (and to it’s maximum extent. Ajit was inquisitive and open minded to know the reasons why Byomkesh thinks so about the content of the newspaper (including the advertisement section). And Satyavati, as she is pure heart woman, she tends to see positives in everything. So when Byomkesh refers an incident (mentioned in the newspapers) where a man have married a widow; Byomkesh sees some malicious intentions in it; but Satyavati considers it as a genuine work; while Ajit is open to know more.
Actually, these detailing is the key part of any visual media (be it a Film, TV Serial or even Advertisement). The makers must have been given credit for the same.
Also one more news mentioned in the newspaper is about a new insurance policy declared by a company where a couple can get both of them insured together in a single policy. So in case either of them is dead the survivor will get the insured sum. While Byomkesh think this will ignite malicious intention in either of them to get rid of the other, Satyavati couldn’t be agree with him.
Also see how Byomkesh is attentive to surroundings and how he senses that someone is approaching to his floor (and home too). Also PuntiRam tries acting smart to sense who is outside, is showing his typical nature.
Let us continue the tale, it was Habul, Byomkesh’ neighbour. Habul tells Byomkesh that his sister Rekha is dead! Byomkesh immediately goes with him to visit his home.
Rekha and Manmath Rudra aka Nantu was in love. Nantu’s father Dr. Rudra didn’t like the relation as Rekha’s family could not give him enough of money (as dowry). Rekha’s father Professor Dev Kumar was doing a job in college. He was a research scholar. Being a brilliant and talented man he was kind of keen about his precious work only. He was not very homely kind of a man and hence was not giving enough time to his family (which includes Rekha, Habul and Professor’s second wife).
It is also came to know that the relations between Rekha and her step mother doesn’t get along well. And yes, Professor also have insured himself with a huge amount in the same “Couple insurance Scheme”.
Rest of the episode explores how Byomkesh cracks the mystery.
Rajit Kapoor and K K Raina are fantastic actors and they slip into the characters they are playing so effectively that you cannot imagine anyone else playing those roles. They are simple yet effective. Another great thing about their acting is the way they avoid doing over-acting. Otherwise, there are a high number or chances that when you are so much into the character, you may cross the boundary. Sukanya is convincing as Satyavati.
Yatin Karyekar have small role, but he looks convincing. Sunil Dhawan is good as Dr. Rudra. Kartik Dutta justifies the role of PuntiRam. While Pushpa is convincing, Parag Dave is not effective at all, as Habul. He looks completely fake and needs a lot of improvement in his acting.
The realistic locations make the episode very effective and convincing. The wardrobe is well managed. The overall setup is great. Basu Chatterji must be appreciated for making such a nice TV Serial for sure.
Summary:
A very nice episode. The execution is simple yet effective. No doubt there are a couple of poor acting prevents the episode from being masterpiece, but it is watchable for sure.
