Munshi Premchand is considered as the Shakespeare of Hindi Literature. Most of his work is famous for realistic representation of the social issues. The time is changed a lot now and a lot of issues may found irrelevant these days. However such issues still exists in several social segments. The first story told in the serial is titled as Istri Purush (स्त्री-पुरूष). [Note: The wrong spelling is mentioned as it is shown in the DVD itself]. This story is extended into two episodes.

The story revolves around Vipin and his dream-girl or dream-woman. Vipin is just a representative of a majority of middle class men who dream to marry a young and beautiful girl. Most of bachelors have their own fantasy girl (or boy) with whom they like to live their rest of the life. But, the reality is something else, sometimes hard to accept. The second segment of the story explores the fact that, Ultimately the inner beauty is what we require to have (rather than just the physical appearance).

Majority of the actors who performed in this episode are unknown to majority of audience. And performances are also below expectations. Sometimes the gestures made by them are convincing though. But the overall performance is not up-to-the-mark.

The first scene sets the tempo of the story and you got the proper idea of what is coming next. The conversation between the friends is realistic. The gem of this scene is the dialog where Vipin’s uncle asks him that, he tried finding the best girl for him to marry, now if the things went well between them throughout the life, it is good, otherwise, its Vipin’s destiny! Don’t we see such match-making people wandering around in the society? If the couple found them compatible to each other and live happily then these match-makers come claiming that he/she is the one who made it happen. But in case the things went wrong, they raise their hands from the matter by saying, it is their (the couple’s) destiny!. This scene also explores the fact of the days, when elders used to final the marriage of the youth at the place they found better, without even asking the groom or bride!

The marriage scene is realistic, though the facial expressions are below average here, by almost all the actors. It is not a wedding as seen in Karan Johar movies, but a quite simple middle class marriage ceremony. The scene where the friends were playing cards to pass time, after the marriage ceremony shows the emotions of a newly married man who is desperate to see his wife. The scene was ended with the entry of his aunt who seems not be happy with the beauty of the bride and taunts the groom for that. The actor playing Vipin tries hard to show the expressions of a heart-broken youth for achieving(!) what he was not happy with.

The things doesn’t went well between the couple due to Vipin’s wrong attitude towards his wife. The lady try convincing him at various points and asks him to spend some time with her, talk to her as they are a couple now; went all in vein. So will the things between them go well between them ever? This is the rest of the first episode which continuous in the second segment of the story (in the other episode) as well.

The dialogs are first rate. The sets are realistic. Most of the shooting is done at real locations. If you compare it with today’s TV Serials, you may find the locations poor, but it is taken from real life. And yes, a majority of people lives like this. The story itself represents the social situations of the time realistically and in authentic manner. A lot of viewers from the current generation may not relate to those social situations and surroundings and they may not find the stuff interesting at all. The background music is another positive aspect of the TV Serial. The production quality is above average. The DVD quality is good, but the original content was filmed in tight budget and technical limitations, which are clearly visible.

Frankly speaking, the episode is not for all. If you want to explore real social setup and its problems, then only it can interest you. Also you can find the first episode of this tale, a quite pessimistic. It is the second segment of the story which can give you hope. If you like to study or explore the realistic attributes of the society, you should not miss it though.
