The Bourne Ultimatum is the third in the – Jason Bourne Series – after The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. After two successive fantastic thrillers in the people were expecting a lot from this movie and it lives upto its franchisee in terms of action, chases, dialogs and thrills. Of course, there is a lot going on into the book of the same name, which all cannot be justified in the movie, and it doesn’t try to do it wisely. Rather it moves the story ahead from what is seen in the previous films.

This movie have everything you expect from a spy or thriller, especially in the Bourne series. It has hand to hand combats (which is actually the major part of fighting scenes), car chases and thrilling plans and plots. Matt undergo special training and keep doing combat exercise to fit him in the title role. It is essential for him as his character is prepared for fighting with/without weapons very effectively. It adds to authenticity of the character. He played the role so convincingly that you cannot think of any other playing that part now.
Joan Allen acts good and shows the expression needed for her role, if she could have put on some weight, her persona would be more effective for sure. David Strathairn is the perfect choice for the role of Noah, a composed and cruel, fast thinking and firm Deputy director of CIA, which is one of the leads to the entire mishap. Scott is a good choice for the role of the CIA director, however his role is small. Julia is convincing in her small role of Nicky.
The actors chosen as assassins in various countries, are all perfect for their roles. Their way of living makes them look like just a person living next door, using an old and less attention seeking vehicles. It makes them untraceable and hence they can work undercover very easily. Even the vehicles and killing methods shown are effective.
The body language of the actors play a vital role in exploring the character they play. Almost everyone in the movie does it really well. And the tight script and characterization makes them more effective. The wardrobe is chosen pretty well. It reflects the location and the season pretty well.
The cinematography is really good and the visuals are appealing. The background music adds to the tempo of the film. The movie have a lot of action sequences and it was a challenge for the action directors to add something new yet basic and loyal to the – Bourne Franchisee – stuff there. But, they did it well. The car chases are thrilling experience which you will remember after finishing the film. Even their are running chases which are pretty athletic and effective.
The direction is intelligent. There are places where writer/director have controlled themselves from adding unnecessary stuff, for example, when you see Nicky was changing her appearance by cutting her hairs, you will surely remember the very similar scene in the first movie (The Bourne Identity) between Marie and Jason. Director avoided any such romantic track here, wisely.
The presence of the mind shown by each character makes you believe it, and that is the plus point of the script. We give the credit for the same to script writers, but we cannot forget the fantastic characters and incidents moving around him, originally imagined and written by “Robert Ludlum” by any means. He is the real hero. The book is really very detailed and well thought, the film is visually appealing. Going through both them – is a unique experience in its own.
The story ends in a way that we see the protagonist is not dead yet and thus the point to start for the next movie is placed.
The story starts with the chase of Jason Bourne (David Webb) by Moscow police, which continues from the previous film.
At one end Pamela Landy have a lot of questions about Treadstone and the stuff associated with it. A reporter from Turin was also interested in knowing more about the operation and Jason Bourne! He got an informant who has information to sell to him! The reporter Simon Ross was tracked by CIA and despite of all the efforts by Bourne to save him, he is gunned down.
It starts another cat-mouse race between Bourne and CIA, as by seeing his attempts to save the reporter, Kramer (Deputy Director) ignites a thought that Bourne could be Simon’s source and hence tried to save him! He also informs the entire team including Pamela Landy, that the classified information which is to be sold to Simon is to be protected for the National security. The assassins are then on their way to trace and kill Bourne.
How Jason survives the attempts and explores the truth about Treadstone and got to know his true identity is the rest of the film.
Interesting Information
- The film was nominated in three categories for 80th academy awards and it won all them!
- Best Film Editing (Christopher Rouse)
- Best Sound Mixing (Scott Millan, David Parker and Kirk Francis)
- Best Sound Editing (Karen M. Baker and Per Hallberg)
- The Bourne Ultimatum also won ITV3 Crime Thriller Award for Film of the Year, 2008
- After this film, Matt decided to not to play the role of Jason Bourne again. As per his opinion, the character was all explored, and all his questions are got answered, so no point in continuing the same. There is a fourth film in the series though, with a different hero.
In addition to the commentary (in track 2) The DVD also contains the deleted scene (not in ascending order). These scenes will help you understand the film better at several places. For example, how David (aka Bourne) got to know about the reporter and went to help him (which is from where the story was almost started). Several scenes like Bourne was instructing Nicky to prepare a story and stick to it – after changing her identity and sending her in hideout, are giving more emotional quotient; though they are removed to keep the thrilling experience of the movie, intact.
Overall the movie is a nice and thrilling experience. The Bourne movie lovers – should not have to miss the chance to see Matt Damon playing the title role for the last time.
