Jolly LLB | Hindi Film | Bollywood Movie | Personal Reviews

Jolly LLB is definitely a film worth watching at least once according to us. However it didn’t had the commercial effect at the box office, which it was eligible for.

Of course, it is not a path breaking film and it has its own flows. But, it genuinely tries to explore the incidents inspired from the real life events. The decent performances and some realistic representations makes it worth watching.

It seems that the title of movie doesn’t reflect the content of the film. Probably the word Jolly in the title and the image of Arshad Warsi makes the people thinking about the film as a comic one, which it is not. Of course it has some satirical punches but it is more of a realistic film which has the commercial aspects weaved in it.

It is also worth to note that this film directed by Subhash Kapoor is inspired by the events of the Sanjeev Nanda hit-and-run case of 1999.

We see that some rich (the car is imported so yes, they are rich) youth was driving a car carelessly in Delhi. They were drinking and smoking at the same time also. They were not alone though, there was another group of such brats were driving on the same road. Eventually they came into a verbal duel which resulted into speeding race between them. During this dangerous driving one of the car driver lost the control and his car got smashed into a building by crossing over the footpath.

We see that in a newspaper there was a news printed that a rich brat’s car was passed over 6 workers who were sleeping on the footpath (which lead them to the death)!

In District court of Uttar Pradesh we see several event. How an advocate is gaining a client of the other one. How an advocate was distributing sweets for the lady judge’s birthday. How is the environment found in the real court. The case which is focused here is about a doctor and his son. A doctor handed over control of the operation to his 14 years old son! He did so in order establish a record and noted down in Guinness Book. Who cares about patient and patient’s life?! Jagdish Tyagi aka Jolly tried arranging bail for his doctor client. But during the conversation doctor burst into anger and kind of confess the incident. It resulted into the denial of bail for him. Naturally when demanded his fees, Jagdish Tyagi’s request was refused by the doctor also.

The opposition lawyer who filed a PIL against the careless stuff done by the doctor became a man wanted for interviews by media overnight. Jagdish aka Jolly loose any hope for his career in Meerut and decided to go to Delhi and dreaming to get a lift to his career there, and earn some handsome money there. He has a girl friend with who he want to get married and live a life usually anyone dream.

The conversation seen between the lawyer in a small hotel (better to call it canteen, though) where Jolly went to have tea is satirical one and it has the punch one can expect from the same. Jolly didn’t get a rocket jump in his career by coming to Delhi, he was awaiting for some good case or client here as well. His brother-in-law advised him to have passions till the right time come for him. There enters Tejinder Rajpal – a star advocate. We see that he is fighting the famous drunk driving accident (which we see during the titles) case. And he was fighting on behalf of the accused who is a son of a wealthy businessman. We must say that the court room scenes are rather realistic than being filmy. Which is one of the positive points of the movie. During his argument Rajpal was able to prove that there is no evidence against his client and media is simply over-reacting and creating hype for the case because of a wealthy family is involved in the case. The judge have no option but to release the accused based on the lack of evidence.

The scene where Rajpal collects his fees from his client is definitely a good one. How once the work is over, people tries to pay as low as possible for the service they gained, and for which once they crying to pay any amount needed! A really selfish and calculative world it is.

Jolly was impressed by the persona and celebrity status of Rajpal and he took much interest in the case (though it was over). He did collect a lot old newpapers and other stuff and followed the case properly and he found there were stuff which area against the accused which was declared innocent. He decided to play a master stroke and file a PIL against this result. His aim was simple, by filing a PIL in this high profile case he wanted to get media attention which can prove a boost in his career.

Will his these decision take his career to the heights he expected? Well, you need to watch the movie to know it. Arshad is a fine actor as we know and he got a few serious roles (remember – Sehar for example) and he works as per his potential here in this movie. Amruta is looking nice girl next door and plays her part with honesty. Boman is first rate as usual. It is Saurabh Shukla whose performance will catch your eyes. He is so convincing. Rest of the cast members does their bits. The first song between Arshad-Amrita is not very catchy. Actually there is not much scope of romantic songs in the movie and it lacks music it should have otherwise provide where there was an opportunity. The movie have some flows also. And in fact, in the last court room dram we expected something more. Anyway, though, a larger than the life drama can be there in the filmy courts and probably director thought this is better to keep it more realistic.

We must say that the writers and director did some earnest efforts (it took them remarkable time to research for the stuff). It is also worth to note that behind this satirical stuff we see how a system can be manipulated by rich and powerful fellows. The movie speaks for common men and their right to get justice. These positive points takes over to the downsides of the movies.

Though the movie got a moderate success, such films should get more at the box office. So the creators get motivation to make more such films. As democracy is all about equality and voice of everyone should be heard and got noticed equally.

A film much better than some of the commercial hits.
