Gulliver’s Travels | Movie Review | Hollywood Movies

The “Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathan Swift has seen many a film and TV adaptations and this 2010 film, directed by Rob Latterman is latest in the series and like its precedents, it also concentrates on Gulliver’s stay in Liliput but also brings to life some part of Brobdignag.

Movie : Gulliver’s Travels
Director : Rob Letterman
Starring : Jack Black, Jason Segel and others

Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) works at a mail room of a news paper in New York city and is depressed by his dead-end job. Trying to impress a journalist called Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet), he takes a report from the internet and send it to her as his own work. Darcy finds the report impressive and charges Gulliver with an assignment to go to Bermuda Triangle and write about the legends of mysterious disappearance of ships in the area.

Gulliver rents a boat in Bermuda, and starts his travel in the triangle, falls asleep in the boat, caught in a storm and washed ashore to nowhere else but to Lilliput. The tiny inhabitants of the island capture him and imprison him in a cave. Here, he meets Horatio, victim of a jealousy by general Edward and prisoned for his love for the liliputian princess Mary. After the island across from Lilliput, Blefuscu, infiltrates commandos to kidnap Princess Mary, Gulliver manages to break free of the plough-machine he is forced to work and then rescues the princess from being kidnapped.

Now, Gulliver is a hero and enjoys a luxurious treatment from the liliputians. But, Edward becomes jealous of him and starts working with Blefuscians to bring Gulliver down. He builds a robot and drives Gulliver to on the shores of Brodignag, where he is captured by Glumdalclitch, a giant girl who is to Gulliver as Gulliver is to the people of Lilliput, and forced to become her doll complete with wig and dress.

Meanwhile, Darcy comes to Bermuda and is imprisoned by Liliputians. Gulliver escapes from Brobdignag and finally is face-to-face in dual with Edward. What happens next must be enjoyed on the screen.

The movie nicely portrays the story of a mail room guy, frustrated with his job, landing up in strange countries and finally rising to the occasion to save the day. Of course, the special effects do add a lot to the experience of this movie……..Enjoy
