How often have we all done this? At the end of a bad day, a long week, a hectic project, a tiring journey, we have all wanted to escape in a good book before we fall asleep. For us it just takes our minds off the real life and it’s problems, but for Thursday Next, it literally means going into the fictional world inhabited by fictional characters, who don’t think that “Their world is not real“.

At the end of “The Eyre Affair“, we left Thursday happily married and shortly into this book, she is still happily married to Landen Park-Laine, full of plans to start a family and continue leading a life that preferably wouldn’t involve assassination attempts every week. But, that obviously doesn’t happen. Goliath corporation is back with ideas to exploit Thursday’s capacity to get in and out of the books without a machine’s help, her nemesis Acheron Hades is still living in her memories and seems to have come back to make more mischief and she has a defense lawyer calling her out of blue to be present at a trial while she hasn’t committed any crimes.

Things start to get weird as suddenly she seems to be a center of series of coincidences that always end up in a very good try to kill her. But, worst of all, Goliath joins hands with ChronoGuards who go in past and eradicate Thursday’s husband. She still has the baby and the memories, just to make the blackmail that much more effective. Her father shows up with a warning that the world is going to end in two week’s time and only she could save it.

And if all of this is not exciting enough, the cherry on this cake is “Jurisfiction“. That’s right, Thursday travels to Osaka to find a book left to her by Mrs. Nakajima in order to help her enhance here skill in the book travel department and she discovers “The Library“, which is monitored by “The Cheshire Cat“, where “Jurisfiction” meetings take place in Norland Park (Jane Austen‘s “Sense and Sensibility“) and where Thursday becomes young apprentice to Miss Havisham (Charles Dickens‘s “Great Expectations“.)

Add to this a discovery of Shakespeare’s long lost play called “Cardenio“, more exciting time travels and book jumping, attacks on Neanderthals (that’s right, nothing is extinct in this world), chasing zombies and evil beings with vacuum cleaners and you have got a very entertaining page-turner.

Worth reading especially if you have got the literature bug 🙂
