Chillar Party | Bollywood Film | Hindi Film Reviews

A quality kid film is a delight to watch; not only for kids but also for the parents. It is true that the time is changed. Parents are living the fast life and in the battle of life they have to compromise a lot of stuff. Devoting quality time with the kids is one of the same. In the earlier times we did wait for the vacation period when we used to got a chance to watch a nice movie with the family. Kids of today are getting smarter and living a better quality life, there are no two thoughts on that. But, sometimes we feel that the actual childhood, the innocence gets missing day by day. Making a child movie is no kid job.

Movie : Chillar Party
Director : Nitesh Tiwari, Vikas Bahl
Starring : Irrfan Khan, Sanath Menon, Rohan Grover,Naman Jain, Aarav Khanna,Vishesh Tiwari, Divji Handa, Shriya Sharma, Chinmai Chandranshuh, Vedant Desai and others

Having a quality movie, which a family can watch together. Which appeal them all and provide the pure fun, is a challenge. “Chillar Party” is no path breaking film I must say, but it is a genuine and honest effort anyway. In the time when skin show, adultery, abusiveness is conquering the cinema; you need a ton of guts to making a clean, nice and watchable movie. When you go to watch Chillar Party, make yourself prepared that you will not be entertained from the very first scene. It takes time to understand the kids’ wold. Its almost after 40-50 minutes you will enter in a zone which will grip you till the end. The real heroes of the film are the kids and kudos to them for their act.

Much praised, no flip side, well, its not that. Some stuff could have been executed better. The Chaddi March is really tough to digest concept, when elaborated by the kids, especially. What more you miss, is a few legendary songs. Though, the story goes in such a nice way, you will not miss songs, but whenever they are, they could have been better. I must admit that legendary film writer Salim, who was part of the writing team for several blockbusters, is having more knowledge and assessment skills about the cinema then a lot of critics who review film these days. Sometimes I find it difficult that if there are five film released a day, how could the reviews for all them available by the same reviewer same day. May be my lack of knowledge, may be I don’t understand the PR process and blah blah blah. When Salim have offered his FilmFare award to the film for what it is, it told everything. The quality of the film, the way it is executed and more.

ChandanNagar is a society in Mumbai. Where a few families of similar age group are living. Ditto for the kids belong to them. They are:

  • Arjun / Encyclopedia [Sanath Menon]
  • Ramashanker / Akram [Rohan Grover]
  • Balwan / Jhangiya [Naman Jain]
  • Aflatoon/ [Aarav Khanna]
  • Laxman / Second Hand [Vishesh Tiwari]
  • Lucky / Panauti [Chinmai Chandranshuh]
  • Silencer [Vedant Desai]
  • Shaolin [Divji Handa]
  • Toothpaste [Shriya Sharma]

Together they makes the “Chillar Party”. They have their fun and all, and they loose the cricket match with (I won’t say, against) the grown up boys of the other society. But they are adorable.

One day, the elder person who need to go out, brings a boy named Fatka [Irrfan Khan] to work in place of him, to wash the cars of the families in the society; he comes with Bhidu – the dog, who is his mate. The life of the Chillar party is changed from the point onwards. They didn’t like the boy and the dog either. They tried to get them out of the society. Later on the kids understands that they were wrong and they befriends with Fatka and Bhidu.

All is well then right? Nope! A minister is invited for inauguration in the society and his secretary was bitten by Bhidu (of course, with a reason). This makes the change. The state minister brings a rule to effect that any dog not having NOC from the society will be thrown out of the city. The Chillar Party do not want to let the dog and Fatka go away. They stands with him with their rock solid support and the battle begins. The rest of the things are the delight to watch on your own. Two sequences that make the hugest impact and not only irks smile but a genuine laughter are, Jhangia negotiating with Fatka on behalf of the chiller party and Jhangia comes for the Chaddi march. Also see the innocent expression of the girl when she see all the kids ready for chaddi march. This is what the innocence of a child is.

All the kids acted really really well. I would like to appreciate Naman, Chinmai and Irrfan more amongst the other, who are equally talented. The person who played the role of a male having a female voice, really needs appreciation for choosing such a challenging role. All the other actors are first rate and really makes the movie a delight to watch. Director and write due (Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl) made a decent and courageous attempt and they done their job well. The movie comes as a relief. It is nice in terms of a lot of things. It have its shortcomings but just watch it once with your loved ones and you won’t regret definitely.
